Clip Chart Behavior System
Positive behavior is always recognized in my classroom. I am incorporating the Character Counts program which includes the Six Pillars of Character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Along with this I am implementing Steven Covey’s 7 Habits of Happy Kids: be proactive, begin with the end in mind, put first thing first, think win-win, seek first to understand, and then to be understood, synergize, and sharpen the saw. Displaying these traits leads students to show excellent citizenship along with leadership life skills.
Students will have their names written on a clothespins (clips). At the start of every day, all of the students' clothespins will start in the middle on the GREEN section (Ready to Learn). Then students will move up or down on the chart based on their behavior for the day. When I see students showing good character, using the 7 habits, or following classroom rules, they will get to "clip up", meaning move their clips up to the next level which is YELLOW (Good Day). Students continuing to show good character will move their clips up to ORANGE level (Great Day) and add their names to a “Coyote Cash” for a prize drawing. If students show exemplar behavior for the day they get to move up to the top level RED (Outstanding) and add a stripe to their clips. When students continue to make good choices they will put their clothespins into the "Outstanding Bucket" and possibly be chosen at the end of the day for a prize.
When students are not showing good character or following classroom/school rules they will have to "clip down", meaning move their clips down to the next level which is BLUE (Think About It). No consequence is given. If the students continue to not show good character they move their clip to the level below PURPLE (Teacher’s Choice) and lose a privilege that I choose (i.e., 10 minutes of recess, 10 minutes of time out time, computer center, 10 minutes of “Fun Friday”, etc.). Continuing to make bad choices will lead to movement to the last level PINK (Parent Contact), which means the teacher will contact the parent/guardian and choose an appropriate consequence for the student.
Students are able to move up and down on the chart throughout the day. Even when clips are on a blue, purple or pink area, students have opportunities to “clip up” again and earn their way back up to green. Children will learn that it is their CHOICE to change and to be responsible for their decisions (proactive).
All children will have a take home folder in which there is a monthly behavior chart. At the end of each day students will color their calendars to match the color they ended up with. If you see that your child has blue, purple or pink please take a few minutes to discuss it. ALL PINKS MUST BE INITIALED BY A PARENT/GUARDIAN. Communication between parents, students and teachers supports students' success.
